Beautiful 18 carat gold early victorian mourning locket dated 1838. Designed with a central blue forget me not flower encircled by an ouroboros snake, (the circle of life and death and eternal love) with further floral morifs all in black enamel. The back has a similar design but with the additionof ears of wheat. (wheat - symbolises the harvest of souls) The locket opens to display woven hair under glass on one side, and on the other, the underside of the lid, the engraving 'John Crooke Freeman, Ob 12th February 1838 AET 27' The locket case is very similar to a watch case design, with further delicate enamel ornamentation to the watch bale and loop.
Truly exceptional and rare
