A Black Forest whip hook is a type of decorative coat hook, often hand-carved from wood, typically featuring animals like foxes or dogs.

Whip hooks were popular in the late 19th century with Victorians on their Grand Tour as a souvenir.

They vary in quality, depending on the skill of the carver. Some were made by big artist's studios, some by peasants sitting along the side of the road, waiting for tourists.

This one is of very fine quality.

A hare dressed as a hunter, with game bag and gun. The hunted becomes the hunter. His glass eyes keen and resolute.

His legs are made from the horns of the chamois goat.

The wood is probably linden or lime.

Measures 41cm x 11cm.

I collect these myself and I can report that they are very hard to find now.

In excellent condition.
