Rare Italian Micromosaic Ring.

The plaque shaped ring mounted with a fine micromosaic of a Goldfinch sitting on a twig.

The Goldfinch was a prominent religious symbol in medieval and Renaissance Christian art.

Because it feeds on thistles, the bird came to represent Christ’s Passion, the Crown of Thorns, and eventual resurrection.

face measures - 30mm x 20mm. shank at back - 2mm

Italian circa 1800

The gold is marked for 18 and there are some other hallmarks I can't work out (see pics)

Condition - mosaic is in perfect condition. Back of ring has wear to the edges but is totally stable. (has been repaired some time ago with lead)
