The Mr T of Acorns, this unusual large acorn with two oak leaves and a stem, curling at the top into a ring for a chain, all modelled in 800 silver.
I'm guessing this was originally made as a pomander; the nut twists around and disconnects from the cup, inside would be spices that could be inhaled. I wouldnt mind putting some lavender in there myself.
800 silver is an alloy that is 80% pure silver and 20% other metals, such as copper. The "800" mark, also known as millesimal fineness, indicates its composition and was widely used in continental Europe, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for jewelry and flatware.
The acorn was a popular symbol from the Victorian era into the 20th century.
They symbolised fertility, growth and strength.
‘From the tiny acorn, a mighty oak tree can grow.’
