Georgian Sepia Ring With A Scene Of Two Lovebirds On A Plinth With A Seated Hound And Monogram JD

Beautiful ring, a lovely Georgian octagonal plaque ring that gently curves around the finger. A nice chunky piece of rock crystal with attractive bevelled edges is set over a sepia miniature of a mourning scene, a plinth adorned with a garland of flowers, and seated on it two love birds.

A whippet or greyhound sits next to the plinth and looks up at the birds. A shield with the monogram JD leans against the plinth. The scene is framed by trees and on the ground is a discarded bow and a flaming torch.

The birds clearly represent the lovers, and love, and the dog symbolises fidelity. The loved one's initials are JD. I'm not sure why the torch? and the bow are on the ground.

condition - the top of the miniature has a fine crack and there is a blue mark which we can pretend is the blue sky breaking through the clouds, but I dont know what it is. I just had to buy it. These type of mourning rings with unusual subjects are so hard to find.
