Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. As snakes shed their skin through sloughing, they are symbols of rebirth, transformation, immortality, and healing.
The ouroboros, snake with tail in his mouth, symbolises birth and death and renewal - the circle of life.
They were very popular during the Victorian era. Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a snake ring for her engagement to symbolise protection and eternal love.
