Stunning, early 19th Century snake brooch and pendant.
Modelled in 18 carat gold (actually tests as 19 carat) the snake holding three gemset hearts, the central heart hangs from his mouth and is set with an emerald, the ones either side are set with rubies. All the hearts are decorated with canetille goldwork, typical of the period.
The snake knots around himself multiple times. His scales are beautifully engraved in three dimensions and have that wonderful patina that you only see on antique jewelry. His head is set with a matching pear shaped ruby and he has gold bobble eyes.
At the top of the brooch I have added an antique 18 carat gold bail which flips back and can be hidden if you want to wear him as a brooch.
I have kept the brooch pin attached but it can be removed if you wish.
The gold is a beautiful rich yellow which varies in my pics which were taken in the English gloom, or beneath the indoor ceiling light!
Weighs - 12.9g
Measures approx 40mm x 30mm
Not incl bail
English circa 1830
Condition - small losses to the canetille work on the right heart
The glass that would have been on the back of the hearts is absent. (Probably when the hair was removed)
A really exceptional piece.
