Superb mid 19th-century Chatelain or Sword hanger. Probably Scottish, modelled in silver gilt with a stag's head encircled by the national emblems of the United Kingdom; The English Rose, The Scottish Thistle and The Irish Shamrock. There is also a large green emerald cut paste, perhaps representing the Emerald Isle.
There is a metal loop to the reverse so that this piece can be slid onto a leather belt.
The english rose - set with bohemian garnet
The shamrock set with glass mosaic
The thistle set with split pearls and paste aquas.
Framed with thistle leaves
Beneath the stags head is a ring that holds two gold col long reeded links, the ends set with gold hound's heads.
The hounds hold rings in their mouthes which hold two leather buckled straps, stitched with silver thread.
These leather straps would have been used to attach a sword to a belt.
