Gorgeous Pair of Cut Steel Butterflies, Circa 1830–1840
A beautiful mismatched pair of early 19th-century cut steel butterflies, offered together because they complement each other so wonderfully. If desired, I can separate them at £675 each
Shown in the photographs with a beaded necklace that I will include with purchase.
Dating from the period when cut steel work was at its finest, each butterfly is covered with individually handcrafted, polished, multi-faceted steel bosses. These tiny half-spheres are mounted on rivets pushed through the backplate, then meticulously filed and polished by hand.
The steel studs vary in size and feature richly faceted surfaces. Charming accent elements—such as marquise-shaped pieces used for the antennae, wing details, and body patterns—are all characteristic of early manufacture and high-quality workmanship.
Unlike most examples, which are relatively flat, these butterflies are beautifully three-dimensional, giving them a lifelike presence and exceptional visual appeal.
