These Faith rings called gros- coeur (big heart) rings are infact engagement rings of Vendeen origin. In Brittany, the region where they are associated, they were especially popular with sailors. The heart of the ring is crowned with seven hemispheres believed to represent the seven days of the week according to the adage ‘Fidelity every day of the week, until the end of our days and beyond into eternity’ . In the 19th century the jeweller would give the bride a small ring called ‘coral ring’ or carnelian’ to act as a keeper ring - see photo (I have one of these too) Photo from the book Traditional french Jewellery by Michael Fieggen page 176.
