Georgian 18ct Mourning Ring With Black Enamel And Hair Monogram With Fern Detail 1781
Charming high carat gold mourning ring with black enamel band and oval face with monogram 'MLC' or 'MJC' set amongst a fern design made from macerated hair under rock crystal.
'MATw CRAYMER OB 11 MAY 1781 AET 49' - is spelt out in gold on the enamel band, which is carved by hand with the obituary and then filled with vitreous enamel in the negative space.

Matthew was from the 'Parish of St. George in the county of Middlesex' ... he says ' also I give to my two cousins Ann Taylor and Jane Pool the sum of twenty pounds each for mourning'and we can assume this ring was made with that mourning money for one of the family.
